SILVERY TRAILS
Sometime ago I was out in a grassy place late at night, in a full moon. At my feet, several snails were gliding this way and that, each leaving a silvery trail by the light of the moon. Together, they wove a beautiful pattern, of which they could not be aware. Cardinal John Henry Newman once wrote
God has created me to do him some definite service; he has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another. I have my mission – I may not know it in this life, but I shall be told in the next...Therefore I will trust him. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away.
It is not always possible to understand what God is doing in our lives, but we can be sure we are leaving our mark – and he will make it beautiful, if only we will trust him. And if a Community of Blessing consists of a whole number of people living faithfully, what beautiful patterns are made of human lives by God’s Spirit.
